Characteristics of 42 alloy

2026-10-14

42 alloy usually refers to Alloy 42/4J42/FeNi42, which is an iron nickel constant expansion alloy with a nickel content of about 42%, corresponding to American standard UNS K94100 and ASTM F30. It is not a high-strength structural component material, nor is it a high corrosion resistant alloy. Its core advantage lies in its low and stable coefficient of thermal expansion, which can be well matched with glass, ceramics, silicon chips, and other materials.

Typical Applications

  • Lead frames and packaging shells for integrated circuits, transistors, and optical communication devices;

  • Glass metal, ceramic metal gas seal fittings;

  • Relays, sensors, crystal oscillator housings, precision optics and measuring components;

  • Precision fasteners or structural components with low thermal mismatch and high dimensional stability are required.

Precautions when making screws or precision parts

42 alloy is suitable for precision parts with high requirements for dimensional stability and thermal matching, but it is not a highly wear-resistant or corrosion-resistant material. If used for threaded connections, it is recommended to control the torque to avoid repeated disassembly and assembly that may cause biting or deformation; Nickel plating, silver plating or other surface treatments are usually required in humid, acidic and alkaline environments.
